Subscribe for regular articles, interviews, research, archival material, and commentary on Somalia’s modern history, with a particular focus on the Siad Barre military regime (1969–1991). The government that seized power in 1969 promised Somalis the world, and after early successes, descended into a brutal dictatorship whose legacy endures in a fractured state and a traumatised society. This is a story of embers and ashes and one I aim to piece together by sharing the material I’ve gathered over the years.
